The Number Devil shows up again on the second night in Robert's dreams. Only this time, Robert wasn't as suspicious of the Number Devil as he was on the first night. On the second night, the number devil challenged Robert to identify the missing number from the forest (the last number discovered) 1) Describe this number and its importance?

2) What did the tiny flylike numbers represent? What digit was missing?
3) What was the problem with the Roman numbers?
4) When the Robert writes 9 + 1 = 10, the number devil says, "One and zero? One plus zero doesn't equal ten." Why did the number devil make this statement?
5) How can you make numbers hop? This is similar to writing numbers in what form? 6) How can you tell a number's value?
7) Robert wrote the year he was born in which two mathematical forms?
8) According to the number devil, what kinds of numbers exist?
the tiny fly like numbers represent the number 1.the digit that is missing is 0.the problem with the roman numbers was that there was no zero.
ReplyDeletei agree because it say that 0 was the last number to be discovered
DeleteI agree with you David, but you have to use the capitalization rules and cite from the text.
DeleteThe tiny fly like numbers represented the roman numbers and the number that is missing is the zero. The problem with the roman numbers is that there was no zero. The number devil made the comment that 9+1 doesn't equal ten because there aren't any zero'sin roman numbers.
DeleteDavid, I agree. Good job!
DeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in 2 ways. One was in Roman form. That was MCMLXXXVI. He was born in the year 1986. Then, Robert wrote 1986 in expanded form. That was 1000 + 900 + 80 + 6 = 1986.
ReplyDeletei also agree with ndeye
DeleteI also agree with ndeye
DeleteI agree with you Ndeye
Deletei agree with Ndeye
DeleteI agree with you ndeye
DeleteAgreed. Nedye. You are right
DeleteI agree with you Ndeye. Well done.
Deletealso, think that why the Romans had to us letters as numbers
ReplyDeleteThe problem with roman numbers was that they were so hard to read and very complicated to understand.Roman numbers have no 0.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mariam because roman numbers are hard to understand because it is a mixture of symbols that represent different numbers.
DeleteI agree, also very descriptive answer
Deletei agree with you but you can be more descriptive
DeleteI agree with you that is true
DeleteI agree with you since the Romans had to have many different letters for each number just because they did't have 0.
DeleteBased on the Number devil the first mathematical form the Robert wrote the year that he was born is in roman numerals and the second mathematical form he wrote it in is in a numerical expression.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Roman numbers is that they have no zero, as stated in the text. The text states , " Instead of 1986, they had to fiddle with all those M's, C's, L's, X's, and V's. The Romans had to give each number a different letter, all because they didn't have zero."( page 36). So, since Roman numbers had no zero, it makes writing their numbers a lot more complicated
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you Ndeye because in the Number devil the roman numerals X,M, and C have the number 0. Because X equals 10, M equals 1,000, and C equals 100.
DeleteWoops I did not read your comment correct. Sorry!

Deleteits true we do
Deletethe tiny that were flying was representing the number 1. the digit that is missing is 0
ReplyDeleteI think the tiny flylike numbers represented all the numbers that were already reviewed in the last chaper. Also, the digit that was missing was 0 because it was not reviewed yet.
ReplyDeleteI agree with chris
DeleteRoman number is missing a zero
ReplyDeleteI agree with Derek, but I think it would be best if you could go more into depth with your explanation, so that your answer is a little more clear and understandable.

Deletei agree...
DeleteI think the number devil stated that 1 + 0 doesn't equal 10, to show that when you add you are not adding the digits but the values of a number. Many people make this mistake of adding digits instead values. This is why the number line is very helpful in math
ReplyDelete1) Describe this number and its importance.
ReplyDeleteThe number that was missing in the forest was 0. The trees around him were the ones and the little "tiny fly-like numbers" that were "dancing in front of his nose" were all the numbers from 2-9, meaning that the only number that wasn't in the forest was 0. 0 is an important number because without it things would be a lot more complicated. We might still have been using the Roman Numeral system, and because of this 0 is "the most sophisticated of numbers"
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree with fataha because she correctly use evidence and she address main points.
DeleteI agree with fataha because she used evidence an gave details
DeleteI agree with Fataha that 0 is in fact the most sophisticated number due to the purposes it gives.
Deletethe problem with the roman numbers was that the didnt know how to use 0
ReplyDeleteI agree with Luis but maybe you can be more specific and explain. So its much easier to understand the question.
DeleteI agree Rodolfo with your first mathematical form, which is Roman numerals. I disagree that the second mathematical form is a numerical expression. Actually,it is expanded form, which is when you break down the number by place value, and add all of them together. The year Robert was born, 1986, was written in expanded form: 1000+900+80+6.
ReplyDeleteSorry I forgot what it was called.
DeleteI did not forget what it was called I just did not remember what the expression was called.
Delete7) Robert wrote the year he was born in which two mathematical forms? One form his age is 1986. Another form is Roman form MCMLXXXVI which equals 1986
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Mia, but I think you should add more details to make your answer better.
DeleteThank you Fataha I will try to improve my answer.
DeleteImproved response:
The two forms Robert wrote the year he was born in was first in Roman Numeral form "MCMLXXXVI" then in expanded form which was "1000 + 900 + 80 + 6" which, if you do the math, is 1986, the year in which Robert was born.
I agree with Mia on the MCMLXXXVI but i disagree when you said he wrote it in 1986. He wrote it in expanded form like this 1,000+900+80+6
Deleteplease add more details but it was good all in all for the small sentence
DeleteGood job Mia. That is a great answer
Deletethe tiny fly like numbers represent "to the power" for example 2 to the 3rd power but instead the 2 is at the bottom and the power number is small and it is at the top.
ReplyDeletei agree with you because that's the same example they give in the book
DeleteThe number devil made that statement to Robert because he wanted to make a point to Robert so he could be better in math.
ReplyDeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in Roman form and expanded form
ReplyDeleteI agree Aliana. Also, please alaborate with text evidence.
DeleteI agree Aliana. Also, please alaborate with text evidence.
DeleteI agree and it also states it in the book
DeleteI agree and it also states it in the book
DeleteI agree, Jario. Digits and values are different concepts. Also, I agree with Fataha because in the picture on page 31, you see all numbers except zero, which helps visualize what is going on in the book.
ReplyDeleteroman number is missing the 0
ReplyDeleteits not in complete sentences it doesnt expllain ur answer
DeleteIts not a complete answer please add more janae
DeleteI agree with ndye suggestion because rodalfo made a good statement but he missed pit out one statement on the number deveil.
ReplyDeleteyou spelled devil wrong
DeleteThe numbers hop when you put a tiny number on top of a bigger number, it looks like the number is hopping. This is similar to writing exponents.

ReplyDelete3) The problem with Roman numbers is that they have no zero. The number zero is necessary because without it ,a number would be missing. The example given in the book is that there has to be something between 1 and -1
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ndeye because it was all the numbers but zero
ReplyDeletehi fataha
ReplyDeleteI agree with Janaidy because the number zero is very important and without it, they number system would be messed up.
ReplyDeleteNdeye you spelled the wrong it makes your sentence have bad grammar
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteYour comment says they number system would be messed up. You put they instead of the.
DeleteThe problem with Roman numbers is that they had no 0 so they had to change all the numbers also the numbers was hard to understand because in the chapter it said,"The first M means 1,000. C is 100 because before the second M you must subtract it to get 900.L is 50 and X is 10. You add them together, which gives you 80 V is 5, which you add to our friend 1 to get 6. So this is 1,000+900+80+6." now if anybody would have just read it without knowing much about Roman numbers would not understand it. so it was complicated because the Romans had no 0.
ReplyDeleteYes, Fatoumata, I agree without the number 0, things take longer to write, and not as simple 1986
DeleteI believe the number devil acting this way because he was jealous that the Robert figured out the answer before he did. Answering this question got him mad because he is the number devil the king of numbers
ReplyDeletethe problem with the roman numbers is that its missing the 0
ReplyDeleteAndrew your answer is not a complete sentence and it does not explain your answer.
Deletei agree with ndeye
Deletei also agree with rodolfo
DeleteI disagree Angel that is from the first night.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why the number devil said 10 is not the same as 1+0 because he didn't use place values it is suppose to be 10+0
ReplyDeleteWouldn't that make the number 10 become the number 100?
Deletei agree
Deleteno it wouldnt
Deleterodolfo that wouldnt make it turn to 100
DeleteYes it will because Mariam said that the number devil did not use the place value. If he used the place value then it will equal 1 instead of 10.
Deletei agree
DeleteThe Roman numbers makes it confusing just because it has no 0
ReplyDeletei agree
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThe problem was that the romans didnt know how to use 0. For example roberts biirthday is written like this in roman form MCMLXXXVI. He was born in the year 1986. Then, Robert wrote 1986 in expanded form. That was 1000 + 900 + 80 + 6 = 1986.

ReplyDeleteYea i missed up a bit
DeleteThe problem with Roman "numerals" (This is what the Romans call it) is that they had no zero according to The Number Devil. In the text it states that the "Romans had give each number a different letter all because they didn't have zero."
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteshould put the total number at the end
DeleteYou can tell a number's value by looking at the numbers in a place value chart. For example, if you draw a place value chart and you insert the number that was given to you in each number's correct spot, you will know the value of each number.
ReplyDeletei agree wit you because you could make a chart to see the one tenths hundredths and thousands place and write the number in so you could see were it is at
DeleteI agree with lians
Deleteliana**
DeleteNumber four When the Robert writes 9 + 1 = 10, the number devil says, "One and zero? One plus zero doesn't equal ten."Why did the number devil make this statement? The number devil makes this statement to show that just because this is ten it does not mean that if you add one plus zero equals ten
ReplyDeleteYou need to keep explaining
Deleteok i agree with you i will next time around
DeleteI agree but make sure you add enough details to support what your saying
Deletei know that is what i am going to do
DeleteThe problem with the roman numerals was that they didn't have a zero. Without the zero, the roman numerals were complicated. On page 36 it says " I told you we couldn't do without it. That brings us back to the Romans. They reckoned they could, and look what happened. Instead of 1986, they had to fiddle with all those M's, C's, L's,X's and V's. The Romans had to give each number a different letter, all because they didn't have zero." This proves that not having zero was the problem with the roman numerals or numbers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that because you were stating the romans language and that was spacfic
DeleteI agree with Vianny. I had that answer too, and without zero the way to write numbers takes a long time and also it is very complicated.
DeleteI agree with you Vianny :) I got the same answer.
DeleteThe problem with the roman numbers as that there was no zero in the roman numbers so it was difficult to write numbers in roman.
ReplyDeletei agree with you
Deletethe Roman numerals were really hard to read.
ReplyDeleteneed to explain more
Deletetrue
Deletetrue
DeleteI agree but you need to explain more.
DeleteYou did not elaborate on what you meant by the Roman numerals are hard to read. You need to have details and explain what you meant by the Roman numerals are hard to read.
DeleteIt explained it by numbers on the internet to
Deleteture
Deleteyou do need
I agree but you should use a detail from the the book to support your opinion, also give an example that will clarify your opinion better
DeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in two different ways. The first way was in roman form (mcmlxxxvl) The second way was in expanded form (1000+900+80+6).
ReplyDeletei disagree because the number devil was the one who wrote his birthday in roman numbers
DeleteI disagree because the number devil was the one who wrote Robert`s date of birth year in roman numbers.
DeleteThe number devil
DeleteI agree with you. I like how your answer was short, sweet, and straight to the point. Maybe next time you should add a line from the text.
Delete3)The problem with the roman numbers was that in the book the number devil Robert was born 1986. but if you try to write that in ancient roman numbers that would be MCMLXXXVI ( 1,000 +900+80+6) But they were tough and hard to read but it was so complicated because the Romans had no zero . zero is necessary you really cant do anything without it the number devil recalls on page 37
ReplyDeletei agree with Luis because the roman didn't know how to use the number zero so they used letters to describe numbers and took longer and more complicate names
ReplyDeleteThe problem with the roman numbers was that they did not know how to use 0. So instead of using a number like 1986 or Roberts birthday they would write MCMLXXXVI. It states in the second night " They reckoned they could, and look what happened. Instead of 1986, they had to fiddle with all those M's, C's, L's,X's and V's. The Romans had to give each number a different letter, all because they didn't have zero." So because the Romans did not have a zero they had to make letters for numbers instead.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Lenny since Robert didn't know how to use 0
DeleteI agree with you and I liked how you added the example of Robert's birthday in roman numbers.
DeleteHE MADE THIS STATEMENT TO SEE WHERE ROBERT MIND IS IN MATH AND HOW HE LISTEN TO MATH LANGUAGE . ALSO HOW HE UNDERSTANDS WHAT TO DO.

ReplyDeleteNumber 7. Robert was born the year of 1986. He wrote this is 2 different ways. The first way was MCMLXXXVI. The second way was to write it in expanded form. He wrote "1000+900+80+6= 1986".

DeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in 2 different ways. The 1st way was roman numerals MCMLXXXVL which is 1986. The 2nd way was expanded form which was 1000+900+80+6
ReplyDeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in two different ways. The first way was in roman form (mcmlxxxvl) The second way was in expanded form (1000+900+80+6).equalize 1986
ReplyDeleteThe problem with the roman numerals is that none of the roman numerals have 0.
ReplyDeleteture
DeleteYou need to add text evidence Dylan.
Deletethey don't use roman numerals if it has a zero or put a regular zero
DeleteI agree with you Dylan
DeleteHE MADE THIS STATEMENT TO SEE WHERE ROBERT MIND IS IN MATH AND HOW HE LISTEN TO MATH LANGUAGE . ALSO HOW HE UNDERSTANDS WHAT TO DO
ReplyDeletePlease be more detailed because i dont understand what you mean.
Deletei agree with sufyiany and no capitails
Deletehave you ever heard of lower case letters? Also explain your answer more I don't really understand what you are trying to say
DeleteI think the fly like numbers represent his hatred of numbers and bugs.
ReplyDeleteCan you specify what you mean by fly like numbers represent his hatred of numbers and bugs.

DeleteNothing to do with math or the book
DeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in expanded for and in solid form meaning one number by another number. The expanded form was 1,000 + 900 + 80 + 6 and MCMLXXXVI and the solid form was I * X and 1900 + 86 and all of those ways equals 1986 witch was the year Robert was born.
ReplyDeletegood job showing what you did

ReplyDeletethe problem with roman numbers is they had no zeros
ReplyDeleteI agree but you need to add more detail
DeleteYou need to elaborate and cite.
Deletebetter need capital at the beggining
DeleteI agree but I think you should add a line from the book.
Deletethey don't use roman numerals if it has a zero or put a regular zero
DeleteDo you have any text evidence to back up your claim? Also, I agree too.
DeleteThe problem was missing a zero and also the positive and negative numbers were backwards, in the wrong place.
ReplyDeleteThe tiny fly like numbers represent the 1. And the digit that was missing was zero because zero is nothing
ReplyDeleteI disagree,Ceesay, because to me, the tiny fly-like numbers actually are all different numbers from 1 to 9. But I do agree that zero was missing.
DeleteCeesay, I believe that you should've elaborated more on your idea so the reader, will be understand what you are trying to convey to us.

ReplyDeleteAnd I would like to add on that he didn't know how to use the number 0.
ReplyDeleteOK, everyone please stop commenting about people's grammar. We are supposed to be talking about the math, this is annoying me. This is not Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. So let's stick to replying to everyone's intelligent answer. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRobert wrote the year he was born in in both roman and expanded form. His name in roman was MCMLXXXVI and expanded was 1000 + 900 + 80 + 6 = 1986.. He was born in 1986.
ReplyDeleteBlog Question:
ReplyDeleteWhen Robert writes 9+1=10, the mber devil says,"One and 0?" One plus zero doesn't equal ten". Why did the Number Devil make this statement?
Response:
The Number Devil makes this statement because he wants to show Robert the idea of hopping and what 0 does to help it. For example, "Hopping?', Robert said scornfully. "What's that suppose to mean?" Numbers don't hop'. 'Numbers hop if I tell them to hop', replied the Number Devil. 'All right, all right', Robert said, 'Just tell me what you mean by hopping?' Make the ten do one hop, an it remains exactly as is:
10*1=10
Make it hop twice, and you get:
10*10=100
Make it hop three times, and you get:
10*10*10=1000
'So if I make it hop five times,' Robert cried, 'I get 100,000! Once more, and I get a million!'
'Simple, eh? That's the beauty of the zero. It lets you hold a space and move on. You can always tell a numbers value by it's position: the farther the left it is, the more it worth; the farther the right it is; the less it's worth." This shows how the zero is important when hopping numbers because it allows you to hold your place and move on. As an example of this, I would like to add on, 'When you write 555, you know the last five is worth exactly five and no more; the next to last five is worth ten time more---that is, fifty; and the first five is worth hundred times the last one---that is, five hundred. And why? Because it's been hopped to the front." This elaborates on the Number Devil's point that 1+0 does not equal ten because the zero is used as a place holder and let you continue to move on. The 1 in the tens place is 10 because it's been hopped to the front. This allows Robert to understand the basics of hopping and zero.

ReplyDeleteQuestion 7: Robert wrote the year he was born in 2 ways. One was in Roman form and he wrote MCMLXXXVI. This means that he was born in the year 1986. Then, Robert wrote 1986 in expanded form which was 1000 + 900 + 80 + 6 = 1986.
ReplyDeletei agree Emily :)
DeleteRobert wrote his year of birth in roman numerals and exponents. The problem with roman numerals is there is no zero in roman numerals because the concept of zero probably didn't exist in roman times
ReplyDeleteI mean multiply by 1 then 10 ect
Deletei agree with your answer
DeleteI think the numbers were bugs to specify how annoying math is too robert
ReplyDeleteThe two ways Robert wrote the year he was born are in roman and expanded form. The way he wrote his name in roman is he wrote MCMLXXXVI. Which means 1986 and the way he wrote the year he was born in expanded form is 1,000+ 900+ 80 +6 which equals1986
ReplyDeleteRobert wrote them in roman and regular.
ReplyDeleteexplain regular because the number devil showed him another way to do that
DeleteQuestion#7:Robert wrote the year he was born in one mathematical from, the first was "6+80+900+1000=1986", the second was "MCMLXXXVI", written by the Number Devil.
ReplyDeleteThe roman problem was MCMLXXXVI .It was change to numbers. In addition , it was
ReplyDelete1,000+900+80+6=1986.That was the year he was born .
Robert wrote down the year he was born in two ways he was born which re in roman and expanded form.In Roman,he wrote MCMLXXXVI which was 1986.In expanded form,it was 1,000+900+80+6 which equals 1986
ReplyDelete3) What was the problem with the Roman numbers?
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Roman numbers was that there was no form of zero.
QUESTION 7: The Number devil makes this statement to make Robert think about why the number 0 is there and how do numbers hop.
ReplyDelete
