The First Night.....

Hello readers,

WE have all read through the first night of "The Number Devil." Having fun? At first glance, the math all looks easy. The Number Devil comes to a young mathematician (like yourselves) in his dreams. Throughout the book, he will show him "interesting" ways  to think about math. The book all looks easy, but there are twists. In the first chapter, he uses lots of "1's" to make other numbers. So what is the point? 1 x 1 = 1, 11 x 11 = 121, 111 x 111 = 123231, and the kid says what happens if you use eleven 1's times eleven 1's and the pattern breaks and the kid admits that he guessed a lot of 1's, and the Number Devil goes nuts, and explodes.

Why do you think the Number Devil responds this way?

What makes numbers so devilish? What do you need to prove it?

What are most genuine mathematicians bad at?

What problem does the number devil present to Robert during their first encounter? Find the solution to this problem. Explain your process and why it is reasonable.

How many numbers are there? How does the number devil describe large and small numbers?

Your blogging task is to:

1) Answer one of the questions.
2) Read all other posts of your classmates.
3) Make a comment on other students' posts.
4) Write posts in response to other students' posts.
5) Use your bookmark with accountable talk prompts to help you use your ideas/thoughts to formulate complete sentences.

You will be graded on a blog rubric for a total of 24 points.

    1. the number devil story was about a kid who had a nightmare were he meet a devil that gives him hard math problem.he helps solve math problems beause he knows what he is struggling with. For example he tell him how to deal with big math problems

    2. nice work will and i agree because the number devil was getting angry because when Robert got the answer correct then he got so fustrated

  2. The Number Devil was getting red and exploded because he was angry that Robert knew something before he did not. Robert guessed that 11,111,111,111 times 11,111,111,111 would not get the backwards answer like 11 * 11 is 121, and 111 * 111 is 12,321. The number devil was expecting to know the answer, so I think that is why he gets angry and explodes.

    1. I agree with Ndeye and I would like to add on that the Number Devil was also frustrated with the fact that Robert guessed and he got it correct. But when he tried doing the calculation in his head he got it wrong. The Number Devil believed that mathematics was a matter of science not guessing.

    2. I agree with Nevaeh and Elizabeth. I would like to add on that The Number Devil had even went as far as insulting Robert by calling him an idiot, only to have the comment come back to himself. Also, The Number Devil said "When you get to five million etcetera, you can go on infinitely." On pages 15 and 16. Robert, someone who does not like math(consequently making him bad at it ) , however was able to prove him incorrect.

  13. The Number Devil responded this way because when he tried solving the problem in his head he got frustrated and didn't know the answer. But when Robert did it, he guessed and he got it correct. The Number Devil was mad at the fact that Robert used a prediction, not a calculation.

  17. The number devil acted that way because he could not solve the problem. Also that Ronald was right. In the book "The number devil it states well i bet it doesn't work. The number devil started doing the problem in his head ,but his face turned bright red again and swelled up like a balloon. Was it because the problem was hard?Wait a second the number devil mumbled.I cant seem to come up with anything.Damnation! You were right. It doesn't work How did you know?"

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think the number devil responds this way because as a mathematician you're not suppose to guess. Your suppose to use specific strategies to solve challenging math problems. You have to do work to solve problems, there is no random guessing in math, you do make educated guesses. I feel that the number devil believes in this because on page 25 he says “Guessing? Guessing is not allowed in mathematics! Mathematics is an exact science!”This proves that The Number Devil feels that guessing and mathematics are not two words that go together.
Another reason why the number devil may have reacted in such a way is because Robert solved a problem before he did. The number devil is supposed to be the king of math and here is Robert a kid who barely likes mad guessing and solving a problem before he did. On page 25 it says “ Wait a second.” the number devil mumbled. I can’t seem to come up with anything. Damnation! You were right. It doesn’t work. How did you know?” This shows how Robert beat the number devil to the punch.
The third reason why the number devil may have responded like that is because Robert caught him being a bit of a hypocrite. In the book the number devil says that there is no guessing in math. Robert replies by saying “But when you said that numbers don’t stop, that they go on till the cows come home, that was a guess, wasn’t it?” Right after this is when The Number Devil has his big reaction, proving in a way that The Number Devil was upset about what Robert said.

    1. I agree with you Vianny, and I would like to add on that the number devil thought that he knew everything about math and numbers. But the fact that Robert, who is a beginner, out-smarted him, made him feel powerless and not so bright. According to THE NUMBER DEVIL," How dare you? What are you anyway? A beginner! A rank amateur! And you want to teach my trade?" This shows that the number devil is not only furious because Robert guessed, but that he out-smarted him.

  19. I agree with most of your explanation but not everything in your answer is relevant. I think you should get right to the point or you might trow the reader off the road. Basically you would throw the reader off.

  20. I believe that the number devil responded in this manner because he felt envious that he has been beat at his own game. He feels that since he is a number devil that nobody can beat him at math, so the fact that somebody stole the glory from him got him feeling distress. In addition the number devil was indignant that Robert was able to figure out the answer before him even though he guessed. According to the book math cannot be guessed said the number devil. But Robert proved him wrong so now he cannot contain himself. That is my opinion on the response of the number devil.

  24. I agree with fataha . I would like to add on, the number devil was mad because he said "mathematics is an exact science and not just guessing " since he is the creator of numbers you would think he knows everything but an boy who doesn't even like mathematics had guess something right would make the number devil highly mad. You would think the number devil has tricks up his sleeve but one guess basically killed him

You can basically use the number 1 to solve any problem. One example being what the number devil said to Robert, 5,723,812. You can use the number one until you get to said number. 82. I think, throughout the book, the number devil showed Robert "interesting" ways to think about math, but there were twists. In the first chapter, he uses lots of "1's" to make other numbers. So what is the point? 1 x 1 = 1, 11 x 11 = 121, 111 x 111 = 123231, Roberts admits that he guessed a lot of 1's, and the Number Devil goes nuts, and explodes. And I say this because as it stated in the book "("Wait a second,") the number devil mumbled,("I can't seem to come up with anything.Damnation! You were right. It doesn't work. How did you know?")"

  83. I agree with angel because he was jealous that the Robert figured out the answer before he did. Answering this question got him mad because he is the number devil the king of numbers.

  84. I agree with Mardy and Angel because the number devil was not able to out the answer the question before Robert and was mad after the fact that Robert (a boy that hates numbers of any kind) figured it out before the king of all numbers.

  85. The numbers are devilish because just as the number said "there are infinitely small numbers, there are infidelity large numbers" Which shows that all numbers are innate Thats what makes numbers devilish.
