Our avid 7th grade readers have now read through the third night, We learn that Robert had a hard time getting to sleep. This time both Robert and the Number Devil are in a cave without an entrance or an exit. The Number Devil teaches Robert about basic ideas of division and the concept of prime numbers. Also, he tells Robert that if you divide any number with zero, the number will always come out in a strange number.

ReplyDeleteThe restricted numbers in math are zero and one according to the Number Devil. These numbers are restricted because they mess up the concept of division. When you divide by zero in a division equation you will get zero for everything just like multiplication. The Number Devil explains how division is like multiplication because reverse of multiplication. According to the Number Devil ,it says,"Because it's forbidden. Dividing by zero is strictly forbidden' 'What would you get if you divided nineteen by zero' ' I don't know hundred, maybe.Or zero anything in between" Form this evidence we can conclude that Robert at first hated division and did't know that one and zero were restricted and when the number devil asked him what 19 divided by zero was it took a while for him to think.

DeleteA prima donna number is a prime number. And the only even prima donna is the number 2. I know this because the only factors of 2 are itself and 1. And this is what makes a prime number prime. So, this is why 2 is the only even prime number. Also, it has to be prime because since it is the 2nd number and it has no other factors. All the other even numbers are composite, because all of them have at least 2 to be divided by.

Robert hates division because it is not as simple as adding, subtracting, and multiplying. When you add, subtract and multiply numbers, things always come out even, but with division, you sometimes get remainders.

To further explain, division is like reverse multiplication. For example, 18/3 is 6 and 3*6 is 18. However, it is different for zero. The example used in the book was 19/0. 19/0 could be lets say 19. Since division is reverse multiplication, then 0*19 must be 19, but it is not. Instead, it is 0. The fact that it does not apply to the saying that multiplication and division are reverse, it is forbidden to divide by the number 0.

This is because you are dividing 21 into zero equal groups, in which the answer is nothing, since dividing is about splitting something up equally. 21 times 0 is also 0. This is because you are you have 0 equal groups of 21, which gives you 0. This is also devilish. Multiplying and dividing should never give you the same answer, but it does. This is just another example of numbers not following the rules! So, this is why zero is forbidden, because it wants to do its own thing! But, you get the same answer because 0 is nothing, and it is a special number. If you divide a number by nothing, and multiply it by nothing, you have to get 0. There is no other answer possible

Robert is the kind of person who always wants to know the answer. And when he doesn't, it irritates him. For example, 3 times 12 is 36. And 3 plus 12 is 15. 12 minus 3 is 9. When you divide 12 by 9, it is 1 remainder 3. Why did division have to be so devilish? It had to be the operation that sometimes will not give you the exact answer. Plus, sometimes when you divide you get a repeating decimal like 3.333333333333333333 and so on. That is so annoying! So I can relate to why Robert does not like division. This is why Robert hates division. Sometimes, I hate it too!

DeleteThe first 15 prima donna numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, and 47. This is because they have no factors other than themselves and one. I noticed that as the numbers go on, there is more numbers in between the prima donna numbers, probably because they have more numbers to go into them. For example, if 13 did not go into 39, it would have been prime. And if 7 did not go into 49, it would have been prime. Since they are getting larger, it is increasingly easier for numbers to be composite.

What bugs me about division is that you get this remainder," this shows that Robert didn't like dividing because it doesn't always fit easily into a number and it sometimes have remainders.

DeleteDividing by zero is strictly forbidden because dividing by zero is undefined. What I mean by this is that nobody has figured out how to divide by zero. Nobody has come up with a logical answer to dividing by zero. Division is like multiplication reversed for example, 3X5=15 and 15 divided by 3=5. And for example, 19 divided by zero is, say, 19. When you say it in reverse, 19x0 you zero, so it doesn't work and mathematicians have not figured out the way to divide by zero.
